1825–1849
Scotland’s first railway age began with coal, horse haulage and short industrial lines, then gathered speed until trains were joining cities and carrying passengers into the Borders.

1850–1879
In three restless decades the railway spread from promising routes into a connected landscape of junctions, branch lines, harbour links and ambitious through journeys.

1880–1922
Distinctive companies, liveries and stations shaped an age of express travel, heavy goods traffic, tourist promotion and railway communities with identities of their own.

1923–1947
Grouping replaced the old Scottish companies with the LMS and LNER, bringing new identities, named trains and bold publicity before wartime traffic changed everything.

1948–1967
Nationalisation brought the Scottish network into British Railways. Steam still dominated the landscape, but diesel traction, changing travel and the first major closures were already remaking it.

1968–1993
Modern trains and concentrated main lines arrived alongside closures that severed communities from the network. What disappeared from the timetable began to live on in campaigns, photographs and local memory.
