What the timetable lets us see

One Monday, told through the trains.

Before dawn, passengers from London were approaching Stranraer Harbour in sleeping cars. By breakfast, local trains were moving between Edinburgh and Carlisle, across Galloway and along the Kirkcudbright branch. The named Waverley crossed the Border in daylight; at night, the Northern Irishman began the journey south again.

The selected timetable columns turn surviving printed times into a portrait of travel across the Waverley Route and Port Road on 15 June 1964.

From the small hours to the next morning

The Monday Northern Irishman leaves Carlisle at 2.18 am, passes Dumfries at 3.03 and reaches Stranraer Harbour at 5.23. Its sleeping-car passengers may remain in their berths until 6.25 am.

  5. Night departure · Stranraer Harbour

Why the date matters

Monday changes what belongs in the story.

The duplicate Saturday column for the northbound Waverley is not counted. The 9.43 call at Gatehouse-of-Fleet in the 8.10 Port Road train is marked Fridays only, so it drops out of Monday’s stopping pattern. The Friday boat train and Saturday-only Kirkcudbright services stay outside this view.

Reading the timetable

What the timetable tells us

Times and stops

Departure and arrival times, station calls and printed restrictions come from the surviving passenger timetable.

What it does not show

It does not identify the exact locomotive, every carriage, the passengers aboard or whether a train ran on time.

Railways still being added

A railway remains listed even when its passenger timetable for this date has not yet been added.
